A tree on top of Old Sarum, not too far from Stonehenge near Salisbury, Great Britain. This is the very top of the ancient Celtic fort, a must-see for anyone in the area. The view from on-top of this hill is incredible.

The Amsterdam fog has been impressive lately, and I keep finding myself hoping for more every day.

Walking the mutt around Museumplein tonight and just stood in awe at the sights around me.

I was really hoping for better clouds at sunset, but I resigned myself to the fact that Stonehenge is probably a photography target best left for the locals or someone who can spend 2 weeks in the area waiting to get the right weather. Regardless of my disappointing weather, being at Stonehenge was a profound experience for me. I remember wandering around the site during the day in sort of a daze, staring at the rocks and the design of the site, checking the clouds and lighting for any new angles for my shots, listening to the excerpts on my audio guide and really enjoying myself. But it wasn’t until I had raced back from Old Sarum to arrive just before sunset, that I really began to appreciate the scope and simplity of this massive stone tool.

The building of the site must have been a massive undertaking, and had to require amazing resources at the time. During the building, the placement of the stones had to be so precise to align with the various celestials just right or it was worthless. Think of the weather in the British countryside too. There had to have been numerous times when none of the points of light they were aligned for, would even be visible. After the building of it, for probably thousands of years old men had sat around this site, and tracked the progress of season after season, stars aligning, sunsets, equinoxes and solstices. The amount of patience that the builders and caretakers of this magnificent tool is mind-blowing to me.

In a day and age of instant gratification, 24×7 news and a world-wide-web full of data converging on an information singularity I felt humbled, just by the thought of all the footsteps of all the people who walked these fields back then. With primitive tools and no modern conveniences they carved a lasting legacy out of stone and placed it carefully on the fields of England for hundreds of generations to follow.
